Display your holiday spirit
Home holiday decoration tips—inside and out
With November quickly coming to a close, we can no longer ignore that the holiday season is upon us. If you haven’t already done so, it’s time to get your home into the holiday spirit.
Drag the decorations out of the garage, pour a little eggnog, and crank up the Christmas tunes. These simple steps will help you get your home merry and bright in no time.
Five festive steps to holiday home décor
Dress the door
Christmas wreaths are a holiday classic. They add natural warmth to your home and they are a wonderful way to greet visitors.
If you can’t find a pre-made natural wreath that you like, there are plenty of ways to create a simple wreath of your own. Eucalyptus stems, evergreen boughs, pinecones, and winter berries are excellent materials to work with. Add strips of ribbon or a few Christmas balls that match your holiday décor. Give your wreath a little personalization with the addition of your family’s initial—make it pop by wrapping the letter in jute or a bright coordinating ribbon.
Display Christmas past
Grab cards and holiday photos from previous years. String a length of jute or ribbon along an empty wall space and hang your favourite cards and photos with simple clips.
Give your home a glow
Place a variety of neutral candles and lanterns throughout your home to bring warmth and much needed light all season long.
Dark corners, windowsills, empty tables, and the mantel are fabulous locations to cast a merry glow. Coiling strands of holidays lights in hurricane lamps will make the perfect addition to any decorated hearth or empty floor space. Adding a metal lantern to your porch will create a warm welcome.
Go natural
Bring nature inside with the addition of fresh garlands, swags, and clippings of greenery placed around your home. Natural greens will create a wonderful scent and add rustic details to your home. Include glass ball, strips of ribbon, and bright berries for visual interest
Hang those ornaments
Fishing line, ribbon, and ornaments—like wooden snowflake and glittery balls—are an easy way to add a festive impact to any entrance, window, and/or front porch.
Using pushpins, hang the ornaments at differing heights—placing them close together from maximum impact. You could also hang a few select ornaments from the light fixture over the dining table to add a little sparkle and whimsy.
Make the mantel magical
When it comes to adding a little Christmas magic to your home, start with the mantel. It’s a great place to display Christmas stockings or hang a wreath—or both!
Nestle vintage ornaments into boughs of greenery, or use holly branches and seasonal berries to brighten things up. Flickering light in a variety of candle shapes and sizes is always warm and welcoming.
Perk up the planter(s)
Give your fall planters a little makeover with a little traditional greenery like cedar, pine, dogwood, or rosehips. Add in some glittery decorative sticks, mini Christmas lights, and perhaps a few shiny ornaments for additional bling.
Sweeten things up
Don’t reserve all candies for the gingerbread house—use them for decoration!
Gather up your clear glass bowls, jars, and vases, along with an assortment of holiday treats like peppermints, individually-wrapped chocolates, and seasoned nuts. Fill those glass containers with the goodies, add a little ribbon, and use as accent decoration around your home.
