It’s patio season!

Give your deck a makeover this weekend

The outside of your home should receive just as much attention as the inside does. Luckily, you don’t have to break the bank when it comes to glamming up a drab patio or deck.

Create a retreat where you can unwind and entertain this weekend. These tips will definitely plant some ideas…

Create shade

Whether you choose to build or buy, there are many ways to create shade in your outdoor space. Large patio umbrellas are an easy way to block shade and will keep you covered no matter what direction the sun is facing.

A classic pergola lets you indirectly feel the warmth of the sun. The addition of outdoor curtains and/or manual retractable screens will amp up the sun protection, and also give you a little more privacy. If you’re looking to keep things a little more green, flowering climbers—like rose and clematis—are an excellent way to get shade with the added bonus of beauty.

Sail shades are another great option for creating shaded spaces in your yard and on your deck. They are inexpensive and easy to place over your outdoor dining area, your outdoor lounge area, or both. They are also among the easiest DIY sun blockers to make—if you go that route. All it takes is a triangular piece of fabric with eyelets punched in the corners, and strong twine, or rope, to attach the shade to poles, the side of the house, or nearby trees.

Cover the concrete

If you have a plain concrete patio there are two easy, and inexpensive, ways to give it a fresh look. The first is to coat the surface with masonry stain in a color of your choice. The second option is to lay slate tiles over the concrete with a thin-set mortar.

If either of those options stretch your budget or require more work than you’re ready for, simply lay down an outdoor rug that fits the space. This also works to cover any lackluster outdoor surface.

Get comfortable

Seating is an important feature to include in your outdoor space. Large outdoor pillows, benches, and chairs are fantastic pieces that will help you create a cozy space for relaxation.

An excellent way to incorporate plenty of outdoor seating is with a day bed. Using wooden pallets is an inexpensive way to build your own. Include a comfortable futon mattress covered in outdoor fabric and plenty of cushy pillows covered in bright designs to add both colour and comfort to your backyard oasis.

A hammock is a fun backyard idea that both kids and adults will enjoy. Affordable stands make it easy to include the perfect napping spot on your patio.

Heat things up

A ready-to-roar fireplace adds warmth and ambiance to any outdoor living space. An outdoor fireplace will define your patio as a focal point and a destination–a place to gather, entertain, relax, and make memories.

Critical factors to consider when incorporating a fire place on a deck are placement, seating options, and safety. It’s important to check with local authorities about regulations. If your area doesn’t permit the burning of wood, a gas or propane unit is an excellent alternative.

When it comes to gas and propane fireplaces, stylish options are endless and many units are quite affordable—plus they are both S’more worthy! Propane units are also portable.

Pot some plants

Green up your patio or deck with planters overflowing with anything from tomatoes and fruit to wildflowers and ornamental grasses. The best part is that you can plant just about anything in a pot—even trees—as long as there's plenty of water, sunshine, and hearty fertilizer. These container gardening tips will help you get started.

Looking for privacy? Pot clumping bamboo. This variety provides the best option for backyard planting because they don't spread or become invasive like running varieties do. Since bamboo is tall and susceptible to wind, plant it in solid low-profile pots with a square base to assist with stability. If the pots are deep enough, the addition of rocks or gravel in the bottom will add weight and assist with drainage.

Set the mood

If you’re looking to have one of the most beautiful outdoor living spaces on the block, outdoor lighting is the way to go. String outdoor lights across your deck, and/or pergola, to create a starry-night feel. Add to the atmosphere, and help with safety, by lining any patio or garden path with solar torches and lanterns.
