Time to get scrubbing!
10 spring cleaning tips for homeowners
Spring has sprung!
It’s time to open up the windows, roll up your sleeves, and get cleaning. These top tips will help you get your home squeaky clean this season…
1 Work from the top down to avoid getting what you just cleaned dirty again. It’s also a good idea to work from the inside out. You can’t forget the outside of all those windows, when you’ve taken the time to clean them on the inside!
2 Tackle one room at a time to avoid unfinished jobs. The satisfaction of seeing one room sparkle will make the hard work feel like it's worth the effort—and push you to finish the job. If it helps, make a plan listing every room and job that needs to be tackled. Crossing things off a list is satisfying.
3 Make small repairs around the house. If you're not handy, hire someone to get the job done.
4 Invest in good rubber or vinyl gloves to protect your skin and nails from hot water and cleaning products.
5 Dust your house before you vacuum and wash the floor.
6 Try feather or lambswool dusters with extendable handles to help you reach above window and door frames, and into those tricky corners.
7 Household rags are invaluable for jobs requiring a damp cloth. Natural fibres always work best.
8 Don't stand brooms on their bristles. It destroys their shape and diminishes their effectiveness. If you like working with a broom, invest in a broom holder.
9 Use a Swiffer for light dusting, or your favourite broom or vacuum attachment to clean hardwood floors before mopping with a mild cleanser. Mops with a squeeze mechanism are great for vinyl, linoleum, and ceramic tile floors.
10 Make sure you have a decent-size heavy-duty pail. It’s even better, if you have one with a measuring scale that helps get the soap-to-water ratios correct.
